ETA UK for US Citizens: A Plain Guide Before You Fly

Flying from Chicago, Atlanta or San Francisco to see London, Edinburgh or Cardiff? Sort out one thing before you book the hotel: the ETA UK for US citizens must be approved before you board. Here is how to get it without a headache.

Three trips, one answer: do you have to apply?

Take three travellers. Emily, from Boston, spends a long weekend in London visiting a friend: she must apply. Mark, an engineer in Denver, attends a two-day conference in Manchester: he must apply too. Linda, a retiree from Florida, stays a few weeks with her cousin in Scotland: same answer. In short, the ETA UK for Americans covers tourism, family visits, short business trips and brief courses.

Every person needs a personal authorisation, children and babies included. It is tied to the travel document entered on the form, so a US passport ETA UK record cannot be shared with someone else or moved to another passport. Airlines, ferry operators and rail companies check it before boarding, and without it you stay behind.

When an American does not need an ETA

Not everyone who holds a US passport has to apply. You can skip the ETA if any of these describes you:

  • you are also a British or Irish citizen (dual national) and travel with proof of that status;
  • you live in Ireland and move within the common travel area;
  • you already hold a visa or permit for the United Kingdom;
  • you only change planes in the international zone at Heathrow or Manchester, without going through border control.

Still unsure? The government tool Check if you need a UK visa will settle it. For layovers, the ETA UK transit page walks through each setup.

With the ETA UK for Americans the approval follows your passport, so never apply with a document you are about to replace. If renewal is close, renew first: a new passport means a new application.

Your application in five moves, from sofa to confirmation

  1. Pick up the right passport and keep it next to you while you type.
  2. Copy every detail exactly: name, dates and number, with no shortcuts and no helpful corrections.
  3. Add a recent photo and an e-mail address you really read.
  4. Answer the security questions frankly; leaving something out can be costly.
  5. Pay, then watch your inbox: the decision comes by e-mail.

There is nothing to print, because the authorisation is stored electronically. An application cannot be edited after it is sent, so reread every field. Start from the application page or, if you prefer, go straight to gov.uk/eta/apply. To follow your file later, use gov.uk/check-eta.

Budget: what an American family pays

The fee does not depend on nationality, so the ETA UK for US citizens costs what everyone else pays. The government charge went from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026. Apply directly on gov.uk and you pay that £20 per person. With the optional assistance service the price is €83 per traveller, covering the government fee, a check of the file before it is sent and help during the validity period. Each US passport ETA UK record is paid for separately.

Example: two parents and two teenagers heading to Edinburgh for Christmas. Four authorisations, so 4 × €83 = €332 with assistance, or 4 × £20 by going alone through the government site. Everybody needs their own before departure.

When to start, and what to do if it goes wrong

Aim for at least three working days before the flight; the ETA UK for Americans is a quick online step, but it is not instant. A reply often lands within hours, but some files take longer. If the answer is negative, there are two outcomes. A rejected application can be submitted again: see the page on an ETA UK rejected case. A refused one cannot be appealed, and a visa is then the way forward.

Travelling with minors? Read ETA UK for children. Friends from other countries in your group can check the ETA UK countries list. To follow a file, keep the US passport ETA UK details you entered nearby. For a specific question, write to support@e-visa.online.

Frequently asked questions

My US passport ETA UK link worries me: what if the passport expires soon?

If you plan to renew, do it before applying. The approval is tied to the passport entered and ends at the latest when that passport expires. A new passport needs a new ETA.

Does an approved ETA guarantee I will be let in?

No. It lets you board, but the border officer decides on arrival. Keep proof that explains your trip.

Does the ETA UK for US citizens let me work in London?

No. It is not a visa. It covers short visits, not a job or a move.

Is the ETA UK for Americans only available through this service?

No. The assistance is optional. You can apply yourself on the UK government website for £20.

What if I made a mistake on the form?

A submitted application cannot be changed, which is why everything should be reread before you confirm.

Does a dual American and Irish citizen have to apply?

No. British and Irish citizens are exempt, dual nationals included. Just carry the passport that proves it.
